Information about the Office of Public Records

The Office of Public Records is mandated by DC Law 6-19 and the District of Columbia Municipal Regulations, Title 1, Chapter 15, to review and approve agency records retention schedules; train records officers in implementing the policies, procedures, and guidelines of managing records; collect, store, preserve, conserve and service historical records in the custody of the Archives; collect, store and service temporary records in the custody of the Records Center; and collect, store and service publications in the custody of the Library of Government Information.

Instructions to Download Your Social Media Data

DC Government Agencies are required to submit their social media data to the Office of Public Records quarterly. This is documented in your agency’s Records Schedule and in the newly updated General Records Schedule 20. To begin the process, you must download the data from the social media site. The instructions below explain the process of accessing and downloading this data. Once completed

How To Request, Download, and View Your X (Twitter) Archive

Step 1

Go to your Account settings by clicking on the more  icon in the navigation bar, and selecting Your account from the menu.

Step 2

Click on Download an archive of your data.

Step 3

Enter your password under Download an archive of your data, then click Confirm.

Step 4

Verify your identity by clicking Send code to your email address and/or phone number on file. If you do not have an email address or phone number on file, you will be redirected to the Account information page.

Step 5

Enter the code sent to your email address and/or phone number.

Step 6

After verifying your identity, click the Request data button. If your X account is connected to Periscope, you’ll have the option to request an archive of your Periscope data on Periscope directly.

Step 7

When your download is ready, we'll send an email to your connected email account or a push notification if you have the app installed. From your settings, you can click the Download data button under the Download data section.

Step 8

Once you receive the email, click the Download button while logged in to your X account and download a .zip file of your X archive.

How to Download Your Data from Instagram

You can get a copy of your Instagram data using the Data Download tool.

The Data Download tool allows you to request a file that includes your photos, comments, profile information and more.

You can access the Data Download tool from the Privacy and Security section of Instagram Settings.

Downloading your data is a password-protected process. Only you will have access to your download file. Once you've requested your file, it will be available for download for a few days.

We provide your downloaded data in a machine-readable format; in case you want to transfer it to another service.

Please note that your file doesn't include content that you've deleted from your Instagram account.

How to Download Your Data from Facebook

Download Your Information

You can download a copy of information you've provided to Facebook using the Download Your Information tool. You can download this information in an HTML format that is easy to view, or in a JSON format, which will allow you to transfer your information to another service.

Downloading your information is a password-protected process that only you can initiate. Once you've created a file, it will be available for download for a few days. Your downloaded file may contain sensitive information. You should keep it secure and take precautions when storing, sending or uploading it to any other services

How to Download Your Data from LinkedIn

The easiest and fastest way to obtain a copy of your LinkedIn data is to initiate a data download from your Settings & Privacy page:

  1. Click the  Me icon at the top of your LinkedIn homepage.
  2. Select Settings & Privacy from the dropdown.
  3. Click the Data Privacy on the left rail.
  4. Under the How LinkedIn uses your data section, click Get a copy of your data.
  5. Select the data that you’re looking for and Request archive.

You can select specific categories of data or a larger download. If you select a specific type of data, we’ll email you within minutes. If you select the larger download, you’ll receive an email within 24 hours. Use the link provided in the email to download the information you requested. The data will be available for download for 72 hours.
